Giving parents a choice
Giving children a chance

Children's Scholarship Fund Baltimore is the Baltimore affiliate of the Children's Scholarship Fund (CSF), a national organization with affiliates around the country.  Since the fall of 1999, Children's Scholarship Fund Baltimore has pursued the happy mission of helping low-income Baltimore parents take charge of their children's education.  Our philosophy is simple: all children deserve a chance at a quality education, and parents should be in charge of that education.  Accordingly, we select families at random as our funds allow and offer them scholarships to pay part of their children's tuition at one of the many non-government schools in the area.  The parents or guardians choose the schools and take responsibility for keeping the children in good standing.  We add siblings to the program automatically as they reach school age, so that all children in a family may receive a scholarship.  When parents choose to change schools for any reason, our scholarship follows the child.  Parents must pay a share of each child's tuition.

All our funding is privately donated by generous individuals, businesses, and foundations.  For every dollar we raise, Children's Scholarship Fund (CSF) and the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation give us another dollar.  Hence every dollar donation means two dollars in scholarship funding for our families.

How CSFB Works

  • CSFB provides partial scholarships of 25%, 50% or 75% of tuition, up to a maximum of $2000 per child per year, based on household income.
  • Parents are responsible for the balance.
  • Parents must pay at least $500 for each child.
  • Parents choose the school, apply, and make sure their children meet the requirements.
  • Children may attend legally operating school, anywhere.
  • Most parents choose relatively inexpensive private and/or parochial schools in and around their home neighborhoods.
  • Only low-income residents of Baltimore are eligible.
  • The standard for receiving CSFB assistance is approximately the Federal school lunch guideline.
  • Scholarship recipients are selected at random by lottery.
  • Once a student’s name is drawn, his/her siblings are eligible upon entering kindergarten as well.
