February is Library Lovers Month — a wonderful opportunity to recognize the important role our libraries play in strengthening families and expanding access to learning throughout Baltimore. We are truly fortunate to have such vibrant, welcoming library systems in the Baltimore County Public Library and the Enoch Pratt Free Library. They’re not just places to borrow books; they’re welcoming spaces where children discover new interests, parents find helpful resources, and neighbors come together. Libraries make a meaningful impact every day.

At Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore, we believe deeply in the power of literacy and educational opportunity. Strong readers become confident learners — and confident learners build brighter futures. Our local libraries are essential partners in that journey, helping ensure that access to books, technology, and enrichment opportunities is available to all families.

Enoch Pratt Free Library

Serving Baltimore City for more than a century, the Enoch Pratt Free Library continues its long-standing mission of providing free and open access to knowledge for all.

Across its branches, Pratt offers a wide range of events for all ages, as well as services such as free assistance and advice from lawyers, social workers, and nurses, and help navigating health care and housing programs. From early learning and homework help to teen programs, author talks, and cultural celebrations, the library creates spaces where curiosity is encouraged, and learning feels accessible and welcoming.

This month, families can explore:

  • Black History celebrations and events, like a special screening of The Wiz — the beloved 1978 musical that reimagines The Wizard of Oz through a dazzling lens of African American culture, music, and storytelling.
  • After school activities, including STEM-tastic Crafts: Cloud Slime Edition, and a workshop that will teach you how to create original anime characters (OCs), perfect for your future comic projects or just for fun!
  • Gaming Events ranging from Mario Kart Racing for all ages and skill levels, Teen Chess Class open to all levels, and ‘Black History Bingo’, with a special spotlight on Black authors. Challenge your knowledge, compete for fabulous prizes, and immerse yourself in the remarkable legacy of these literary giants!

Anyone who lives in or owns property in Maryland is eligible for a free Pratt Library card, and children up to age six can start their love of the library and borrow books using their own Pratt First Card.

Baltimore County Public Library

The Baltimore County Public Library offers programs and services that support families at every stage of life. Offerings include passport processing, assistive technology, social worker support, and technology training — meeting real community needs every day.

This month families can explore:

BCPL also offers its innovative Library of Things, where families can borrow board games, Chromebooks, musical instruments, health and wellness kits, camera equipment, citizenship kits, and more.

Practical support is available, too, including tax assistance by appointment and access to a state-of-the-art recording studio, located at the Catonsville Branch, where you can record your new song, podcast, or spoken-word piece. There are also opportunities to gather and connect with others who share similar interests.

Together, these institutions help remove barriers and open doors — reinforcing something we know to be true: access matters.

At CSFB, we see every day how access to educational opportunity changes lives. Libraries play an essential role — supporting curiosity, strengthening literacy, and helping families feel empowered in their children’s learning journeys.

This Library Lovers Month, take a moment to get to know your local branch. Introduce yourself to a librarian. Ask about a program that sparks your interest. Join a book club, attend a workshop, or find a group that shares your passion. You may walk in looking for a book — and walk out having found connection, inspiration, and a stronger sense of community.
