If you’re raising an elementary or middle schooler, chances are you’ve fought in what I affectionately refer to as The Kitchen Table Battle—otherwise known as homework time. You know the scene: declarations of “That’s not how the teacher taught us,” dramatic sighs (maybe even from you), and frustration rising while very little actual work gets done. Add in the mystery of new math, and suddenly it feels less like homework and more like round two of bedtime negotiations—complete with bargaining, stalling tactics, and the occasional desperate plea for snacks.
Even with the best intentions, there’s no shortage of innocent, well-meaning mistakes parents make while they are trying to “help.” Often, it’s as simple as not having a consistent time and place for homework. But with a few smart strategies, the daily homework routine doesn’t have to feel like a fight. Tips and tools for making the whole experience easier include making it fun (yes, fun!) and breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps, which can go a long way toward creating peace at the table.
Still, if the thought of tackling geography terms or sight words makes you want to wave the white flag, it may be worth considering seeking personalized assistance like tutoring. The benefits of tutoring go beyond academic support—it can build confidence, establish strong study habits, and take the pressure off parents during homework time.
Of course, tutoring can be pricey. As of October 2025, the average starting cost of a private tutor in Baltimore, MD is $26.40 per hour. Thanks to the generosity of several local organizations and donors, Baltimore is home to several free and low-cost proven tutoring programs including Reading Partners, The Literacy Lab, and Success for All Tutoring with the Lightning Squad.
One of Baltimore’s true treasures, The Enoch Pratt Free Library, offers free drop-in tutoring service for grades Kindergarten through 12 in all subjects, provided by The Youth Library Tutorial, a Johns Hopkins University student group. In addition, The Johns Hopkins Tutorial Project is an after-school tutoring program that provides academic support for elementary school students (grades 1-5) that offers one-on-one tutoring in reading and math.
For families facing learning challenges like dyslexia, The Dyslexia Tutoring Program provides free one-on-one instruction using the Orton-Gillingham instruction in reading, writing, and spelling for eligible children and adults. They also provide dyslexia screening services for both children and adults.
With so many tools and resources available, homework doesn’t have to end in nightly meltdowns. Instead of surrendering to The Kitchen Table Battle, you can bring a new set of strategies—and maybe even a few allies—to the fight.
