CSFB parent and volunteer Teresa Smiley and her daughter and featured speaker Amber Smiley at the Next Generation Investment Event

It’s not often that investors with multibillion-dollar portfolio management experience share their thoughts on why they like (or don’t like) specific stocks – especially in a public forum. Yet that’s exactly what happened on October 15th at this year’s Baltimore Next Generation Investing Event. Four world-class investors shared their wisdom to support the education of hundreds of Baltimore children.

In its 10th year, the annual Next Gen event raises money for four Baltimore nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving educational choices for local children: Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore, Southwest Baltimore Charter School, KIPP: Baltimore, and Next One Up.

2019 was a milestone year, marking over one million dollars raised by Next Gen for these four nonprofits since its inception. CSFB is grateful to be one of the beneficiaries.

CSFB alumna Amber Smiley spoke at the event, representing our scholars by sharing this wonderful story about her and her sister’s experience:

Jasmine and I often reflect back on our K-8 years at Mother Mary Lange and Cardinal Shehan. We had lots of memorable moments, but our fondest memories are from the science fair competitions. We didn’t like them at first because of all the hard work to prepare, but we grew to love them. We would even pre-plan for the following years’ projects. One year, Jasmine selected the topic ‘Will all liquids freeze?’ and I selected ‘Does the weather impact hair? How and why?’ We worked hard on our hypotheses, theories, and collecting data. That year, we placed first and second!

This small accomplishment helped to broaden our interests in the biology and medical fields and sparked our aspirations to become a pediatrician and anesthesiologist.

If it wasn’t for the CHOICE given to our parents to select a school to attend that provided a quality education, and Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore taking a CHANCE on us by providing scholarships to lessen the financial burden for our parents, I would not be standing here as a CHAMPION!”

Well said, Amber. We’re so proud of you and your sister!

Speakers for Next Gen 2019 included:

  • John Linehan, Portfolio Manager, Vice President, and Chief Investment Officer of Equity at T. Rowe Price
